Located in the heart of Uptown Dallas, the Mi Cocina on McKinney Avenue stands as a remarkable example of how to reimagine a space. Once home to a Del Frisco’s Steakhouse, Mi Cocina has completely transformed the venue, turning it into a vibrant, modern Tex-Mex destination while still honoring the building’s sophisticated history.

The original Del Frisco’s space was known for its upscale ambiance, featuring elegant wood finishes, dim lighting, and the classic steakhouse vibe that catered to Dallas’ elite.

However, when Mi Cocina took over, they approached the redesign with an eye for both comfort and elegance, creating a unique fusion between high-end dining and the casual, inviting spirit of Tex-Mex cuisine.

I’ve had the pleasure of dining at Mi Cocina on McKinney Avenue several times, and each visit has been a fantastic experience. My go-to dishes are the beef quesadilla and the shrimp brochette, both of which are consistently excellent. The flavors are bold, and the quality of the ingredients really shines through. I’ve also hosted several business lunches with colleagues there, and the service has always been friendly and efficient, making it an ideal spot for a quick yet enjoyable meal. I have no complaints—Mi Cocina always delivers a top-notch dining experience.

On Friday evenings, this spot comes alive with spicy music and a bustling crowd. It’s the place to see and be seen, with a lively mix of well-dressed patrons and a few brave souls taking bold fashion risks. Whether you’re looking for a chic night out or just soaking up the atmosphere, Mi Cocina’s rooftop makes for the perfect setting.

What makes this location truly exceptional is the team behind it—sincere, service-oriented, and effortlessly talented at what they do. Every interaction I’ve had, from the host to the waitstaff, has been positive and welcoming.

One standout is JP, a skilled bartender who embodies all of these qualities. You can usually find him downstairs during the week, but on Friday nights, he holds court at the fashionable upstairs bar. If you’re in the mood for something special, ask JP to make you his signature martini—it’s nothing short of sublime.

With a perfect balance of flavors, it’s the kind of drink that elevates an evening, adding to the overall experience of a life well lived.

This past summer we lost a legend, Ron Wommack, a visionary known for shaping the city’s urban landscape. Wommack’s work, celebrated for its thoughtful integration of modernist principles and Texas aesthetics, left an indelible mark on residential and commercial spaces. From sleek townhomes to contemporary urban designs, his architectural contributions redefined modern living in Dallas.

The thoughtful simplicity of his website pictured below spoke volumes to his design aesthetic, we at Kevin Day Real Estate were huge fans and I personally have lived in, and sold, many of his creations throughout the past 3 decades.


Mr. Wommack was instrumental in transforming the residential landscape of Dallas, particularly in the Uptown area. His modernist approach can be seen in projects such as The Vine Condominiums (one of my favorites in Uptown) and Travis Street Townhomes, which emphasize sleek lines, open spaces, and functional urban living.

Wommack’s Uptown designs in Dallas often focused on enhancing urban density while maintaining a sense of privacy and connection to the outdoors, blending architecture with the surrounding environment.
